National tourism indicators, second quarter 2022
Tourism spending in Canada grew 19.8% in the second quarter, a fifth consecutive quarterly increase. Tourism gross domestic product (+20.4%) and jobs attributable to tourism (+11.2%) also rose in the second quarter.

Canada’s population was estimated at 38,929,902 people on July 1, an increase of 284,982 (+0.7%) from April 1. The growth over the second quarter represents an increase of more than 3,100 people per day. This was the highest growth in the number of people in Canada of any quarter since the addition of Newfoundland (see the note to readers) to the Confederation in 1949, which led to the highest population growth rate since the third quarter of 1957 (+0.8%) around the height of the baby boom.

In 2021/2022, Canada’s population grew by a record 703,404 people (+1.8%) to reach an estimated 38,929,902 on July 1, 2022. This surpasses the preceding high observed a year before the COVID-19 pandemic (2018/2019), when the population grew by 536,146 people (+1.4%).
In 2021, there were 367,684 live births in Canada, excluding Yukon. Similar to previous years, the proportion of boys (51.3%) was slightly higher than the proportion of girls (48.7%).
