The First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun is asking for a temporary halt on staking in its traditional territory
The First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun says it has filed a lawsuit over the Eagle mine disaster and “longstanding mismanagement” of mining in its traditional territory.
Both the Yukon government and federal government are listed as defendants, the First Nation says. They’re accused of failing to complete land use plans while simultaneously approving mining projects on Na-Cho Nyäk Dun’s traditional territory.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Chief Dawna Hope says the First Nation’s final agreement — signed in 1993 — promised collaboration on land use planning to ensure sustainable development.
