Battle of Nations marked National Indigneous Peoples Day with a weightlifting competition for athletes aged 10 and up.
THUNDER BAY — A group of Indigenous youth and adult weightlifters enjoyed competing in the Battle of the Nations Strong Event, which featured trap bar deadlift and bench press competitions on June 21 at Marina Park.
“It’s a good way to promote healthy living — I also want to be a good role model for young Indigenous women,” says Carrie Lyon, a weightlifter from Sioux Lookout who won the women’s trap bar deadlift competition with a lift of 500 pounds. “On National Indigenous Peoples Day, I figured this was a good way to celebrate being Indigenous by showing that there’s good ways to live.”
