Governing B.C. NDP has been thrown into turmoil after Cowichan land claim decision, mining claims court case
The B.C. NDP government has been roiled by court cases covering Indigenous land claims and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) — and the consequences of the ongoing turmoil could extend across Canada.
Two different court cases are impacting how the province approaches reconciliation with Indigenous peoples — all coming at a time when major resource extraction projects, of national significance, look to work with First Nations.
The first is the Cowichan lands claims case, in which the Quw’utsun Nation was awarded Aboriginal title to a stretch of land in Richmond, as well as the right to fish in the south arm of the Fraser River.
