First Nations representatives receive update from PHAI – Northumberland View

Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) staff met with representatives of the Alderville, Curve Lake, Hiawatha and Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations communities in early May to provide an update on the progress of the Port Hope and Port Granby projects.

The meeting focused on the Port Granby Project, as it is nearing major construction and remediation activity, and was held at the newly completed Port Granby Project Waste Water Treatment Plant. Central to the discussion were protecting heritage resources and the measures implemented by the PHAI to monitor and mitigate environmental impacts.

Also in attendance was PHAI’s archaeological consultant, Donna Morrison of Advance Archaeology, who described the archaeology investigation that will be conducted prior to the disturbance of any lands subject to project-related construction. Morrison will begin work at the site of the Lakeshore Road underpass, in advance of its construction.

First Nations representatives were provided with an overview of the new waste water treatment plant – which is equipped with best available technologies to treat the project-related waste water – followed by a walking tour of the future and existing waste management facilities.
